  • Francisco Portillo our first winter signing

We have our first signing of the winter transfer window. Attacking midfielder Francisco Portillo arrives on loan from Málaga, where he'd been mostly out of favour this season, although he's generally rated quite highly. He's small, skilful and just 24, and has been brought in to provide the sort of creative spark that has been so desperately lacking since the departures of Salva Sevilla and, before him, Beñat.

I hope he'll be the answer to all our prayers about creative midcenter. But there still remains a lot of work to do. Mainly a central defender.

Agree with you but Portillo has great potential. He could be a very important player for us in helping Betis promoted to the Primera.

Málaga have accepted the loan offer from Real Betis, which will see attacking midfielder Francisco Portillo head to form part of Pepe Mel’s promotion chasing squad in the Segunda.

24-year-old Portillo has always expressed a desire to become an important player for Málaga, although opportunities have been severely limited this season, therefore leading him to become increasingly unsettled.

The attacking midfielder has only made two substitute appearances during the current campaign, both against Deportivo La Coruña in the two legs of the Copa del Rey, with only ten minutes from the bench in the first encounter and just seven minutes in the second.

A number of clubs in the Primera were thought to have taken an interest in Portillo, but after somewhat lengthy negotiations, it’s Real Betis and the Segunda the player has opted for.

Real Betis are understood to have assumed full coverage of the player’s salary and will pay a fee for the loan until the end of the current season, which will cost around €700,000. They have also secured an option to make the move permanent, which will be obligatory should they gain promotion back to the Primera, in which case they’ll pay Málaga a transfer fee of around €1.5 million and have Portillo tied to a contract until June 2018.

Portillo joins Real Betis at the specific request of manager Pepe Mel, feeling he’ll be a key part of their push to get back to the Spanish top-flight, with other reinforcements also expected to strengthen the cause.
