Re: Grupo F - Argentina, Nigeria, Iran, Bosnia

Jihadist militant group, Isis is making headlines by overthrowing local Iraqi governments and taking over a portion of the war-torn country but that didn’t stop them from tweeting a message to Barcelona and Argentine forward, Leo Messi, congratulating the four-time Ballon d’Or winner on his sensational goal and 2014 World Cup win over neighbouring Iran.

Argentina and Iran battled for 90 minutes before Leo Messi fought his way through defenders and scored an impossible goal in extra time to claim the victory and effectively eliminate Iran from the 2014 World Cup.

Messi’s heroics were met with worldwide praise, but the most surprising of which came from a group associated with ISIS who, according to Ishaan Tharoor of the Washington Post, praised the diminutive Argentine and encouraged him to “join the jihadist call.”

“Why would the militants be so excited about Messi’s victory over courageous underdogs? Well, it’s probably a joke.

“But there are reasons for animosity: Iran, a Shiite theocratic state, is deeply at odds with ISIS, whose fighters espouse a puritanical form of Sunnism. Tehran has stepped up its support to the embattled government in Bagdhad, currently dominated by Shiite politicos, and is reportedly helping mobilize and train Shiite militias against the ISIS advance.

“Messi, who plays for FC Barcelona in Spain, probably has no clue what he’s been dragged into.”

While the tweet was likely sarcastic and to be taken as a joke, it goes to show how far reaching this 2014 World Cup is and how renowned Messi has become.
