Re: Sporting de Gijón - Real Betis

Now, this counts as good news: Sporting Gijón 1, Betis 2.

In a game that's unlikely to surpassed for excitement in Segunda all season, Betis conceded an early goal against the second-best side in the division and then took the game to the home team in a determined, thoughtful bid to turn the scoreboard around. Pepe Mel's men didn't do everything right, but they had most of the possession and got the Sporting defence stretched on several occasions before they got their just deserts on 52 minutes - Bruno heading in a Pacheco free-kick - and then again 12 minutes later, when Xavi Torres volleyed home a half-cleared corner. The last half an hour was total mayhem, with both teams creating - and missing - clear chances, but Betis just about deserved to hang on and hand Sporting their first home defeat of the year.
New signing Francisco Portillo came on for 20 minutes and looked very lively just behind the front two, but perhaps the biggest news is that for once young Dani Ceballos had a nightmare game - and yet Betis still won. He was at fault for the Sporting goal, missed a clear chance to wrap the game up late on and was wayward with his passing throughout - but the fact it didn't matter shows we're definitely on the right track.
So, that's six wins and a draw since Julio Velázquez got the sack, and once again you found yourself wondering if this was really the same group of players that looked so lost in the autumn. We're waiting on the Valladolid result later, but right now Betis are back in the automatic promotion spots and, more importantly, momentum is continuing to build. We haven't been able to say this for a while, but this is an exciting time for Béticos everywhere.

Betis: Adán; Piccini, Bruno, Jordi Figueras, Varela; Cejudo (Portillo, m. 72), Xavi Torres, Dani Ceballos, Pacheco (Lolo Reyes, m. 59); Jorge Molina (Rennella, m. 85), Rubén Castro.

    Goals: 1-0: Muñiz, m. 5; 1-1: Bruno, m. 52; 1-2: Xavi Torres, m. 64.

Sporting de Gijón - Real Betis (1-2): A victory of First Division.

A great triumph of Betis over Sporting who had previously gone 20 games unbeaten. The verdiblancos finished the first round of Liga Adelante with fourty points, only three points lower than UD Las Palmas. Now, Real Betis is in good hands with Pepe Mel too.
