  • Barcelona - Real Betis

Having just smashed six past Sporting Gijon, Barca are licking their lips in anticipation of a visit from a meek Real Betis.

This has traditionally been a fixture in which the away team leaves with their tails between their legs. Betis have had their fair share of hammerings at Camp Nou, while the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera is one of Barca’s least favourite grounds to visit. Last season was no different, with Barca brushing Los Beticos aside 3-0 at home, before being turned over 3-2 in the return a few months later.
An ominous sign for Betis then, who have yet to score a goal in this campaign. A trip to Barcelona to play a side just beginning to find its form is unlikely to be the occasion on which they break their duck.

After an uninspiring start to the season, Barca appears to have finally woken up. A solitary point from their first two games (with their only goal coming from the spot) against less than imposing opposition had the white handkerchiefs out en masse. A convincing 3-1 win against Sporting in the Champions League calmed the nerves, but there was still pressure on the Blaugrana to get their first league win of the campaign when they travelled to Sporting Gijon.
Ninety minutes later, and yet another Sporting side were feeling Barca’s wrath, this time to the tune of six goals. Of course, one must not forget that this was against the bottom club, who were playing with ten men for much of the second half. Still, it appears that Barca have shaken off the cobwebs and are ready to plunder more goals.

Betis, meanwhile, are still unbelievably searching for their first goal of the season. Their last opportunity came in the form of their most important game, the derby against local rivals Sevilla. Despite enjoying most of the possession in the first half, Betis looked woefully toothless in attack, with their options in the final third leaving a lot to be desired. The alarming drop in intensity in the second half will also be a considerable cause for concern.

While players like Mark Gonzalez, Sergio Garcia, Mariano Pavone and Emana should be more than capable of scoring a few goals, the absence of the injured Edu is proving to be a significant hindrance. The Brazilian made a bizarre but effective habit of scoring headers from crosses from the left last season, and his side are desperately in need of more of the same.

The uncertainty over the future of Rafael Sobis needs to be sorted out as soon as possible as well, for the benefit of all concerned. To add insult to injury (no pun intended), David Odonkor has not been registered for the squad due to his long-term injury.

    TEAM NEWS

    Barcelona

The long-term injuries to Hleb and Milito persist. Thierry Henry may recover in time but it is unlikely that he will earn a starting spot after Barca’s potency in attack at the weekend. Victor Valdes experienced some discomfort in his knee during the game, but it should not cause a problem. Having finally found some decent form, there is no reason for Pep Guardiola to tinker with his line-up just yet, despite the long season ahead. Therefore, the impressive youngster Sergi Busquets should get another start.

Probable Starting XI – Valdes - Dani Alves, Puyol, Marquez, Abidal – Busquets, Keita, Xavi – Iniesta, Messi, Eto’o

    Real Betis

A goalless start to the season warrants changes, especially upfront, but Paco Chaparro is bereft of any real options. With Edu and Odonkor injured, and Sobis seemingly out of favour, Betis will just have to hope that the players at their disposal can finally find the back of the net.

Probable Starting XI – Casto – Nelson, Juanito, Arzu, Fernando Vega – Mehmet Aurelio, Capi, Mark Gonzalez, Sergio Garcia – Pavone, Emana

    PLAYERS TO WATCH

Barcelona – The usual suspects will be out to shine in front of their home fans, but one name that is flying under the radar is young Busquets. The son of legendary Barca keeper Carlos Busquets, the midfielder looks set to keep the family tradition going after winning the confidence of Pep Guardiola, who coached him in the B team last season. Strong, robust, and with an excellent touch, Busquets is yet another brilliant midfield product from a Barca academy that has produced the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and of course Guardiola in that position.

Real Betis – It is not long since Sergio Garcia was considered to be the latest prodigy to emerge from Barca’s cantera. Things never worked out for him at the Camp Nou though, and spells at Levante and Zaragoza followed. He has matured in recent years, culminating in a place in Spain’s successful Euro 2008 squad (albeit only after Bojan had withdrawn). His dreams the night before this game will surely contain scoring a goal at a ground where he never managed to do so in his four appearances for the senior Barca squad.

Player Ratings: Barcelona 3-2 Real Betis

It was a game of two halves as Barcelona surrendered a two goal half time lead against a gallant Real Betis side, but fought back to snatch a precious home win.

                          BARCELONA

Valdés – 6: Barely had anything to do until he conceded the two goals. Went berserk at his defensive wall for letting in Betis’ freekick goal and had to put the blame on his defenders again for the second.

Dani Alves – 7: As usual, very adventurous down the right wing. Made the assist for the winning goal and even had a couple of chances himself to get on the scoresheet. Left too much space at the back, though.

Márquez – 5.5: Looked a little wobbly at times and did not marshal his backline with the same kind of confidence and authority Puyol would have.

Cáceres – 6.5: Made a superb, well-timed tackle inside the box to stop Sergio García, who looked a millisecond away from pulling the trigger. Far more secure and assured at the back than his fellow centreback.

Abidal – 5.5: Had virtually nothing to do in the first half. Wasn’t needed in defence, wasn’t needed in attack. But had an interesting tussle with Sergio García in the second period.

Xavi – 6.5: Solid but unspectacular. Took a back seat and allowed his teammates infront of him to run the show instead.

Toure Yayá – 6.5: Showed that he can play alongside Keita. Combined well with him in midfield. Wasn’t given as much freedom to roam forward, which is where he is at his most dangerous.

Keita – 7: Took turns with Yayá pulling defensive duties and going forward. But both of them slacked off in the second half and allowed Betis to control the midfield.

Messi – 8.5: As always, mightily active all across the pitch. A constant menace for the Betis defence not just with his runs but with his brilliant, under-rated through balls.. Drifted away in the second half but bounced back strongly. Made two of the goals

Eto’o – 8: Showed his versatility by scoring a stunning first goal and a typical poacher’s strike for the second. Struggled to get a shot on target in in the second half as Betis tightened at the back.

Iniesta – 8: A perfect complement to Messi on the opposite flank. Always had great ball control and balance.

                          Substitutes:

Gudjohnsen – 6.5: At the right place at the right time to notched up the winning goal.

Busquets – 6: Brought in to shore up the midfield and along with Gudjohnsen, they did just that as Betis were starting to take control of the game.

Bojan – 6.5: Had a number of chances late in the game but showed a bit of rustiness in his finishing.

                          REAL BETIS

Casto – 7: Despite shipping in three goals, he pulled off a number of excellent saves to keep Betis in the game.

Nélson – 7.5: Must be thinking he was in for the longest night of his life when Messi decided to team-up with Iniesta to bombard his flank. But coped well in the end and put up a good fight to challenge the likes Iniesta, Messi and Eto’o.

Arzu – 6: Combined with Juanito regularly to ward off the Barça attack. But regularly beaten by the likes of Messi and Eto’o. Improved in the second half and shut the door on the Blaugrana for long periods.

Juanito – 6: See above. Simply could not contain the early onslaught and did not have the command to lead his backline like he normally does.

Fernando Vega – 6: Barely afforded the chance to get out of his own half to contribute in attack as he was kept busy by Messi and co.

Aurélio – 6: Didn’t even bother challenging Xavi, Yayá or Keita for midfield supremacy. Played too deep in his own half perhaps to have made any impact.

Capi – 6: Could not cope with Barcelona’s rampant midfield line. Barely saw any of the ball to provide the ammunition for his forwards.

Sergio García – 7: Came alive in the second half after an anonymous display in the first period. Made a brilliant assist and took the game the Barça defence.

Emaná – 6.5: By far the most dangerous Betico in the first half. Had a number of half decent scoring chances but had to be withdrawn in the second period for tactical reasons.

Mark González – 6.5: The only Betis player to provide any creative spark, but unfortunately, just like Emaná, had to be sacrificed for Monzón for more defensive stability.

José Mari – 7: Like most of the attacking players, barely came into the camera’s view in the first period. Had a spell in the second where he looked like he would stun the Camp Nou. Did score from an audacious chip.

                          Substitutes:

Monzón – 6.5: A brilliant debut by the Olympic gold medallist, scoring from a scorching freekick to begin the fightback.
