Portuguese international goalkeeper Rui Silva became Real Betis’ latest custodian following his move from fellow LaLiga side Granada. The 27 year-old shot-shopper signed a 5-year-deal and comes with an impressive career trajectory and even more impressive resume thus far.

The origins of Silva begin in his native Portugal on the island of Madeira, signing for local club Desportivo Nacional in 2012 and achieving the initial half century of his career with his first 50 appearances in professional football following his debut in 2014.

But, it would be his later move to Spanish football in January 2017 which truly ignited his career. He was awarded with the prestigious Ricardo Zamora Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the Segunda Division as Granada won promotion back into LaLiga in 2018/19 under Diego Martinez. His exceptional displays then propelled his team into the Europa League just two seasons later, where he produced some game-changing performances against vastly more experienced continental competitors like PSV and Napoli as Granada took down both teams as they progressed within the tournament.

Granada, in their first European adventure, made it all the way to the quarter finals stage where they were eventually defeated by Manchester United. But Rui Silva firmly stamped his authority on the continental competition and was at the heart of his teams’ heady days. His impressive displays alerted a host of clubs across Europe, and his contractual situation made him even more attractive to potential suitors.

He made 111 appearances for the Andalusian side before making the move across the province this summer to Seville, joining the green and white army of Real Betis. It was a great piece of business for the club – arriving on a free transfer which includes a buy-out clause of £30 million pounds, a figure which is a better representation of his true value. His move enables him to play in the Europa League once again with the Sevillano side qualifying for the competition this upcoming season under new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

What the new security guard of Los Verdiblancos will bring to Real Betis is a great all-round presence between the sticks. He is capable of making some timely and fantastic saves from some difficult angles. His shot stopping in one-on-one scenarios is also a virtue he has in his locker. Distribution is another strength Silva brings to the table – a key trait in modern day football. His leadership, communication and organising the defence will give the team confidence and structure, something that’s been lacking in recent seasons.

Rui Silva was part of the Portuguese squad which took part in the European Championships this summer. Now he has the chance to firmly establish himself as a top goalkeeper in LaLiga. He will face tough opposition for the number one jersey though. Chile captain and former Barcelona stopper Claudio Bravo enjoyed a wonderful season back in Spanish football to help Real Betis to a European place and experience, leadership and crucial saves have been an integral part in the team’s recent success. With a wealth of experience, he acts as an on-field manager and the eyes and ears for manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Also standing in his way is Joel Robles. Apart from the costly mistake in the derby verses Sevilla last season, he stepped in after the injuries to Bravo and performed admirable. His interventions may have gone under the radar, but Robles played a key role at a vital time of the season to keep the club’s European momentum going.

With healthy competition and three different fixtures lists to navigate this season, Real Betis could feasibly play a goalkeeper in each of them. What is more likely though is one of Silva or Bravo will play in the league and the other in the Europa League with Robles as understudy.

Above all, Real Betis are back in European action this season and now equipped with a goalkeeper in the peak of his powers at 27-years-old, Rui Silva can help his side to yet another successful season.
