  • Víctor Camarasa

After a challenging battle with a severe cruciate ligament injury, Real Betis midfielder Víctor Camarasa is finally back in training.

Still only 27-years-old, the Valencian-born midfielder has shown great resilience in overcoming such a devastating injury, recently making his return in a Verdiblanco shirt, playing the opening 45 minutes of a comfortable 4-0 win over Swiss outfit Winterthur as part of Betis’ pre-season tour.

The classy midfielder has had an up and downtime since his arrival in 2017 from Levante for a fee of seven million euros. His first season yielded only 26 appearances and he struggled to replicate the form from his previous club. It was best for both the player and Betis to seek a loan spell to reignite his career, with recently promoted Cardiff City extending an opportunity in the Premier League. During his spell in South Wales, Camarasa showed his true potential with a fantastic first season, scoring five times in 32 games. It was not enough to save his team from relegation but was enough for him to be recognised as the club’s player of the year.

Another loan spell in England came along, this time London side Crystal Palace but he hardly figured for the Eagles with then manager Roy Hodgson unable to find him a place in the team. His loan spell was eventually cut short in January, making a return to Spain with a loan spell at Deportivo Alavés in the Basque country where he was able to find that spark once again.

He managed to secure the game time he craved and was raring to go for pre-season last summer before an untimely injury wiped him out of the whole of 2020/21 campaign.

Now, after eleven long months out injured, Víctor has returned and will finally get the chance to show his worth to Manuel Pellegrini and the Betis faithful. A mixture of injuries and lack of form have curtailed his career somewhat, but he is still in the prime years of his footballing career, so it’s far from over at this point.

At a time where football clubs are suffering with the ongoing pandemic, the return of Camarasa is as good as a new signing and could be a real wildcard for Real Betis this season.

With the club now battling in UEFA’s Europa League competition as well as LaLiga and the Copa Del Rey, he should get plenty of chances for game time whilst Pellegrini navigates a tricky and jam-packed schedule.

His preferred role as a creative midfielder is an area that lacks real depth for Betis, so Camarasa could supplement well the likes of Sergio Canales, Joaquín, and Nabil Fekir. His effective distributional play with the ball, good positioning on the pitch, and creative talents are strengths his teammates will be able to tap into down the stretch.

The player signed a five-year contract back in the summer of 2017 and with just one year left on that deal, the player will be desperate to put in a good season and secure his long-term future and put pen to paper on an extension to remain at the Benito Villamarín.

Supporters of the club have not seen the best of Camarasa yet, but with a full pre-season under his belt and the prospect of an exciting season ahead, this could be the spark he needs to unlock that ability and deliver the performances everyone at the club knows he is capable of. By doing that, Víctor will show his true value.
