  • Rafael Gordillo

Rafael Gordillo was one of Europe's best left-backs during the 1980s. Tireless on the wing and recognizable for his lowered socks, Gordillo is the only Spaniard (with the exception of Alfredo di Stéfano) in the list of the 30 best players of the 20th century of France Football, chosen by the previous winners of the Golden Ball. Product of the Real Betis academy, he played 9 seasons in the Verdiblanco's first team. With 237 games and 18 goals, Gordillo is the third player with more appearances of the club and, in 1980, he was awarded as the best Spanish player. In 1985 he moved to Real Madrid, where in seven seasons he played 182 league games scoring 20 goals and winning 10 titles, including 5 Liga, a UEFA Cup in 1986 and the 1989 Copa del Rey (Gordillo scored the winning goal against Valladolid). He was one of the stars of that fantastic team of Real Madrid, along with Butragueño, Sanchís, Míchel, Martín Vázquez, Hugo Sánchez, Camacho, Hierro, Schuster and others. Gordillo has been nominated several times for the Ballon d'Or, reaching the 11th place in 1985. In the summer of 1992 he returned to Betis, in the Second Division, contributing to promotion in the 1994 and to third place in the First Division in 1995. He ended his career with Ecija in 1996. Gordillo represented his country 75 times and scored 3 goals. He was part of the Spanish team at 3 European Championships (1980, 1984, 1988) and 2 World Cups (1982 and 1986).
