Real Betis travelled to Germany this evening to face Bayer Leverkusen in a crucial Europa league fixture, and took a bit of beating. They were humbled 4-0 by the Bundesliga side.
Moussa Diaby fired the hosts into the lead in the 42nd minute, before adding a second seven minutes into the second half.
Florian Wirtz made it 3-0 four minutes from the final whistle, only for Nadiem Amiri to add insult to injury and make it 4-0 in the 90th minute.
Nabil Fekir saw red for Betis in injury time, with Leverkusen’s Kerem Demirbay also receiving his marching orders.
Given Celtic beat Ferencvaros 3-2 in the evening’s other game in Group G, the league table has taken on a different dimension.
Leverkusen are top, three points clear of Betis in second. Celtic, in third, are now just a point behind Betis while Ferencvaros remain rooted to the bottom without a point to their name.

Betis play Sevilla this Sunday in El Gran Derbi. “There’s no favourite, it will be highly contested like all derbies. These past two defeats don’t alter how well we’re doing.
“There are two games left in the Europa League and by winning on Sunday we put ourselves in a Champions League position. It’s been a week of difficult rivals, but we hope to redeem ourselves back at our stadium and win three points.”

Joaquin has sent a clear message to Nabil Fekir over his red card against Bayer Leverkusen.
Real Betis endured a disastrous night in Europe on Wednesday night, losing 4-0 to Leverkusen away from home.
The result leaves Betis still in a good position in their Europa league group, in second and with a solid chance of going through, a point ahead of third-place Celtic.
But concerningly, ahead of two crucial remaining games in the competition, Betis' star man Fekir was sent off.
In the 93rd minute, Fekir lashed out and put his hands around the throat of Kerem Demirbay.
It was an undoubted sending off for Fekir, who will now be suspended for Betis' next clash, with Ferencvaros, and Los Verdiblancos hero Joaquin has made it clear that such a reaction simply can't happen.
“Nabil is a footballer with a strong character, with a lot of personality. The nerves and the tension have got the better of him, although these are things that cannot happen because they stain the football. "
Betis will need to put this defeat behind them quickly as they prepare for El Gran Derbi at home with Sevilla on Sunday.
This defeat made it back-to-back defeats for Betis across Europa League and La Liga, granting seven goals in those two outings.
