  • Juanfran: We’re last in La Liga but 30,000 fans still came out to see us

Real Betis right-back, Juanfran admitted that after four months without a win in La Liga, they had forgotten what it was like to claim victory and insists that now they have a new lease on life and must keep the momentum going.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Juanfran spoke about the incredible feeling with the team following their win over Espanyol and how they expect to keep things going.

“After four months without a win, we almost forgot what it was like, but now we must start over from scratch because next weekend is another final and then another and another until the end.

“The team is satisfied with the victory over Espanyol, but not just because of the win, but how we won. We played well and were compact; it didn’t just come down to getting luck. We laid down the foundation and had to break the dynamic of our run of poor results.

“However, things remain very difficult for us, because you can’t get out of this kind of situation if you don’t win. We’re obligated to win at Mestalla or Granada; it doesn’t mean anything at this point if we only win at home.”

Juanfran then discussed the restart of their European adventure and insists that despite their issues in La Liga, they will fight to go as far as they can in the Europa League.

“La Liga is the priority. Real Betis fought hard to get to Europe last year and if we beat Rubin Kazan, we could face Sevilla in the next round, which would be fantastic and that week would be incredible.”

Juanfran concluded by admitting that the season had gone horribly wrong but praised the fans for always remaining by their side.

“This season could end horrifically, but if we win some games in La Liga and meet Sevilla in Europa, we could move up. We could solve this problem in two months.

“We are the last team in La Liga, but 30,000 fans came out to see us when we hadn’t won in four months and when they rushed the pitch, sang the hymn, that was magical. When you lose, it’s a penance because you don’t sleep and it drives you crazy. We’ve gone through some very bad times.”
