José Mari: Betis can win The Derby

With just a week to go until the first derby clash of the season between Real Betis and Sevilla, Los Verdiblancos striker José Mari has stoked the flames by saying he is convinced his side can win the contest.
The Sevilla derby is one of the most hotly contested clashes in Spain and, despite getting thoroughly beaten on both occasions last year, Real Betis striker José Mari is confident his side can run out winners next weekend. He said, “I believe that this time it will be more even and I am convinced that Betis can win it, although of course we must play well.”

Whilst Sevilla may have lost a couple of big names this summer, Betis have strengthened their squad significantly and José Mari acknowledges that this is a factor, saying, “We have a better team than last year, and with the results that we obtain we can become a good side.

Sevilla were stronger individually last season, but their team continues to be good,” he commented.

The match is always an especially intense occasion for José Mari, who started his career with Sevilla. He says it is his dream to score the winning goal in the fixture.

“I have dreamt about us winning thanks to my goal,” he affirmed. “We have so much desire to win the game, but we know that we will have to give 120%

One factor that could work in the favour of Betis this weekend is the fact that Sevilla start their UEFA Cup campaign on Thursday night, although José Mari doesn't want to place too much emphasis on it.

“It could affect them, but I think that they have a squad capable of competing in three competitions,” he continued. “The strong point of Sevilla is that, for the last two years, they have had two strong strikers and two quick wingers.

“Sure, they have an achilles heel or two, but they should not have many after finishing fourth over the years,” he concluded.

Betis President Wants Derby Day Victory

As Real Betis gear up for their highly anticipated derby clash with Sevilla this weekend, the president of Los Verdiblancos, José León, has today outlined his hopes for the upcoming match.
After being thoroughly outplayed and outclassed in both derby meetings last season, Real Betis fans could be forgiven for approaching the upcoming clash with Sevilla with just a hint of caution. However, as Betis president José León spoke today about his hopes for the match, his voice resonated with nothing but confidence and expectation

“I want to win!” he affirmed. “For me, that is sufficient, but for the sake of a spectacle I do hope there are many goals.”

Judging by Betis’ first two results in the league this season , though, it would be fair to say that León’s confidence is at best optimistic. Los Verdiblancos lost their opening day clash to Recreativo 1-0 and followed that with a 0-0 draw against Getafe, all of which means they sit 16th in the league heading into this must win match.

The president does not see his side as underdogs, though, adding, “In derby matches there are no favourites and I believe it will be even right until the end.”

There is little doubt that a win against Sevilla would be a huge boost to Betis and might even kick-start their season. Still, the president is keen to emphasise that even more important than a win is a peaceful affair in the stands.

“We all want it to be a new derby of togetherness. I am telling all the fans in Seville to set an example for the rest of Spain, to maintain the standard of the last derbies and then, in the game, the better team wins. I expect that team to be Betis,” he concluded.

Betis all prepared for big derby

Real Betis coach Paco Chaparro has already prepared his team for Sunday’s big derby against Sevilla, more than 72 hours before kick-off.
El Derbiy Sevillano is considered one of the most fiery derbies in Europe as perennial nemesis Real Betis and Sevilla often go all out when they clash.

Defeat often means more than just three points lost and Betis coach, Paco Chaparro is eager to avoid that this season in his own backyard.

The veteran trainer spent the last few training sessions fine-tuning his starting line-up and with still 72 hours to go before kick-off, he has already finalized his first eleven and barring any last minute mishaps, it is likely to be the formation he will use.

According to Marca, Chaparro’s training session saw him line up Arzu alongside Juanito in the heart of defence, with Nélson and Fernando Vega occupying the flanks. Turkish midfielder Mehmet Aurelio’s recovery from injury will see him team up with Emaná and Capi in the centre of midfield while Mark González and Sergio García will take to the wings. Mariano Pavoné will spearhead the attack as the lone frontman.

Meanwhile, the State Commission Against Violence And Racism, which was recently set up to deal with the social ills of football in Spain, met for the first time on Thursday and they have declared the derby clash as a “high risk” encounter.

The Commission will continue to meet on a weekly basis in an attempt to stamp out anti-social behaviour in the game.

                All eyes on Seville derby

The city of Seville takes centre-stage for the third week of Primera Liga action as local rivals Real Betis and Sevilla clash at the Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera.

Sevilla did the double over their neighbours last season, winning 3-0 at home and 2-0 away, but Betis have splashed out big money this summer and will be desperate to put one over their old enemies.

To do that though, Betis will need to improve on a disappointing run of results that has left them without a win since mid-April and with just one point from their opening two games against Recreativo Huelva and Getafe this season.

It is not going to get any easier for Paco Chaparro's side either with their next four fixtures coming against Sevilla, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal, but Betis striker Jose Mari is in confident mood.

"We have a better team than last year and we could become a good team," said the former Spain, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan forward.

With regards to Sevilla, Jose Mari does not believe Manolo Jimenez's side will be much affected either by having to play in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, or by the summer departures of Dani Alves, Seydou Keita and Christian Poulsen - although he is glad Alves will be missing.

"Sevilla, at an individual level, were stronger last year, but the team continues being good," he said.

"It (the UEFA Cup) could affect them, but I think that they have the squad to compete in three competitions.

"Sevilla's strength over the last two years has been having two very strong forwards and two very fast wingers. I'm sure they will have an Achilles heel but they can't have many after spending four years at the top."

Sevilla winger Diego Capel admits his team are thinking about the derby, but insists they are still totally focused on their European match against Salzburg.

"It's a very important game (against Betis) which we always have in our minds but this squad is very professional and we are only concentrating on the UEFA Cup game," said the Spain international.

García: Sevilla's sales have been noted.

As Real Betis and Sevilla gear up for their much anticipated derby clash this Sunday Sergio García has said that the players Sevilla have lost has been acknowledged but that it will still be a tough match for his new side.
Last season was a season to forget for Real Betis fans. Not only did they finish a dissappointing 13th in the league but they also lost both their derby matches against Sevilla in humiliating fashion, the first 3-0 and the second 2-0.

With a summer of spending behind them though hopes are high that Los Verdiblancos can raise their game this Sunday and possibly beat their arch rivals, although as Sergio García admits it is a tough ask.

"It will a be difficult match but we know that our fans desire it and we need to begin to win games in the league. What better time to start than on Sunday," he said.

The former Real Zaragoza striker was one of Betis's many summer signings this year and he acknowledges that the lack of signings and selling of big players across the city at Sevilla has been noted by his new club.

"They have lost very important players and it has been noted," he said referring to the sales of Daniel Alves, Christian Poulsen and Seydou Keita, "But there is little doubt that they still have a good team."

Betis will be aiming to win their first league match of the season on Sunday following an opening day loss to Recreativo Huelva and then a goalless draw against Getafe last weekend.

                          Del Nido’s unorthodox motivational speech.

Sevilla’s outspoken president, José María del Nido has tried to fire up his players ahead of the local derby in a most unorthodox manner.
The first big clash in La Liga takes place this Sunday in El Derbi Sevillano as Real Betis welcome crosstown enemies Sevilla to the Estadio Ruiz de Lopera.

Both teams, and in particular both presidents, are eager to avoid to defeat and Sevilla’s José María del Nido has been busy all week trying to pump up his players, constantly harassing them with motivation.

The club board and the entire squad shared a meal together in the grounds of the sports city on the eve of the clash, as has been the tradition down the years. And it was there where del Nido addressed his players, in particular the new arrivals, one last time before the big battle.

“Every player’s motivation must go beyond 100%. Anyone who is not motivated for this derbi will be left out of the game,” he was quoted by the club’s official website.

Del Nido has never been far from controversy and neither is the Seville derby and both sets of presidents have already gone out and demand victory from their own players.

La Liga Preview: Real Betis - Sevilla
La Liga is warming up for the craziest exhibition of football passion Spain has to offer, with derby of Seville.

                            The Real El Derbi

From the outside looking in, La Liga’s most passionate match of the calendar –the real meeting of opposing identities – is seen unquestionably as the clash of the titans that is Real Madrid and Barcelona. We all know it isn’t a real derby, more of an international match in symbolic terms, but it means more than many of the ‘real’ derbies……apart from this one.

With Sevilla very much exuding the persona of the better end of the fun loving city, the Beticos revel in putting one over on their hated rivals as the working class club, or veritable paupers of the town. Of course, both splash the cash to similar levels these days, but recent histories could not be more contrasting.

These fixtures have got in the news for all the wrong reasons recently, marred by crown misbehaviour, violence, as well as bizarre logistical and technical problems, such as failing flood lights.

This season, the hosts have more than enough to be concerned with on the field, while Sevilla have begun their campaign relatively well after major changes in the summer

                            Divided Fortunes, Brewing Troubles

Real Betis are probably now unrivalled holders of the unwanted title of Spain’s worst run club.

Atletico Madrid were in the same ball park, but have finally got their act together. The in-fighting and politics at Valencia has ensured rank underachievement for so much of it’s history, while both Barca and Real have sporadically challenged for that title in recent years. But the Beticos are a terminal case, much to the amusement of uptown rivals Sevilla, who have enjoyed something of a renaissance in the last five years after time yo-yoing between La Liga and the Segunda.

Los Pepinos have not managed a league win since April, and coach Paco Chaparro knows all too well that his employers are renowned for whipping managers in and out of office no sooner than the ink is dry on the contract.

As per usual, the club has plenty of quality in its ranks, but forming a competitive team is proving a struggle. So far, a home defeat to Recre followed by a fortunate point at Getafe is likely to fill some of the beleaguered Betis faithful with a feeling of impending doom, such has been the unruly, heart-stopping nature of recent tumbles in form, ensuring the club fights off the threat of relegation on a regular basis.

The real problem for Betis is that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal follow this derby test, so it could be a long Autumn for Chaparro, which he will hope to see out.

Manuel Jimenez, on the other hand, has had a fairly solid start in results terms. The manner of the 4-3 home win over newly promoted Sporting Gijon will have undoubtedly raised concerns over the defence, though Mate Bilic’s hat-trick for the visitors had a large slice of fortune attached to it. Still, it was hardly convincing, but it will take time for a host of new faces at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to settle.

It’s set to be a cracking encounter, not least because of some mounting pressure on Chaparro. Sevilla president Del Nido has already spoke of the motivation he wants to see in the players for the trip downtown, while Betis forward Sergio Garcia has stoked the flames by stating Los Blanquirrojos are not as strong as last season.

With any luck, it will be all about the football and the very unique passion that accompanies this fixture, rather than an exhibition of some of the darker aspects of the Spanish game.

                            TEAM NEWS

                            Betis

Paco Chaparro has apparently settled on a set-up for this weekend, while he certainly has plenty of options. Pavone should lead the line up front, supported by Garcia and Gonzalez on the flanks.

A three man midfield will likely be anchored by the returning Aurelio, which could see Arzu deployed at centre-back in place of Melli.

Probable Starting XI: Casto– Nelson, Juanito, Arzu/Melli, Vega – M. Aurelio, Emana, Capi – Garcia, Gonzalez - Pavone

                            Sevilla

Jimenez kept virtually the same eleven for Salzburg that beat Sporting in the 4-3 epic last weekend. It could mean changes are in the offing, most likely in central midfield with Duscher, who was suspended for Thursday.

Fazio or Dragutinovic could come in at centre-back for Prieto, who was unconvincing in his last league outing.

Probable Starting XI: Palop - Konko, Squillaci, Fazio/Dragutinovic, Navarro - Jesus Navas, Duscher, Maresca, Diego Capel - Kanoute, Luis Fabiano

                            PLAYERS TO WATCH

Betis: Mehment Aurelio was signed to marshal the Betis midfield in the same way he did Turkey in the summer. Maresca was fantastic against Sporting and the Sevilla central midfield provides a basis for all the good wing play that supplies service to the outstanding forwards. How Betis cope here will be crucial.

Sevilla: Right back Abdoulay Konko is a new signing at Sevilla and is supposed to provide more defensive solidity than Dani Alves, allowing Navas to really push on. He hasn’t quite settle yet, and will be put under severe pressure from the excellent Mark Gonzalez down the left.

Sevilla forward Luis Fabiano has warned his team-mates not to underestimate Real Betis as the two sides head into Sunday's Seville derby having made contrasting starts to the season.

Sevilla go into the game on the back of two wins and a draw in all competitions so far, while Betis are yet to score a goal in the Primera Liga this term.

Sevilla followed a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the campaign with an epic 4-3 win against newly-promoted Sporting Gijon last week.

And on Thursday they took a step towards the UEFA Cup group stage with a 2-0 first-round, first-leg win over Salzburg.

Another three points would cement their place among La Liga's early front-runners, while Betis are still in search of a win following a 1-0 defeat to Recreativo Huelva and a 0-0 draw with Getafe in which they spurned numerous chances to score.

History favours Sevilla, who put five goals past their hosts without reply last season, but Luis Fabiano insists when it comes to the derby the form book goes out the window.

"They (Betis) are better now, they've signed quality players and it's not going to be easy," he said. "But we're calm and confident.

"In the derbies there are no favourites and we go into it as equals. They're not the same Betis as last season.

"Some of the new players still don't really know what this derby means, but we're talking to them to try and get across that it's something special and we have to do everything we can to win it.

"It's a game we don't need any extrinsic motivation for and we're going to go after the three points."

With the Brazilian striker back to full fitness following an injury scare while on national duty, Sevilla have a clean bill of health. Midfielder Aldo Duscher may return to the squad after missing Thursday's UEFA Cup clash through suspension.

Betis coach Francisco Chaparro should also have a full squad at his disposal.

The "Mick Jagger of Triana" heads into the contest looking for his first win over Sevilla since taking charge of Betis on the final day of the 2006/07 season.

Despite his poor run against his rivals with his current side, the former Jerez and Cadiz coach was quick to remind the opposition of his track record against them in the past.

"I've beaten Sevilla with other teams. Now I hope to do it with Betis too," he said.

"The team are excited, with a lot of motivation. There are no setbacks with injuries. We're highly motivated and I hope that can be turned into a result.

"I hope the differences between the sides aren't obvious like they were last year. We're preparing for this game fully aware of how Sevilla will play."
