The news broke late last night of Betis' deal to recapture Argentina international Germán Pezzella, with the 30 year-old signing a 4-year deal at the Benito Villamarín.
Verdiblanco fans will be pleased to see the return of Pezzella, but the Argentine returns a very different man to the one who left for Italy in 2017 initially on loan before Fiorentina made the deal permanent the following season.
Germán Pezzella returns to Real Betis on a long-term deal for around €4m.
Pezzella is tough and gritty. Very much a "back in the day" style of defender, prowling around the box, using his positional intelligence to read the transition of play and intercepting the danger. Not only that, Pezzella brings another element of aerial protection to one of the smaller defences in LaLiga. He provides a little more balance to the defence, particularly if partnered with one of the ball-playing options like Marc Bartra.
It's the mental stability and emotional leadership, however, that shines through above all else.
It was Pezzella who stepped up in the wake of former Viola captain Davide Astori's death back in 2018 when Italian football tragically lost one of its most respected figures. As Astori's centre-back partner, Pezzella lost his closest ally and friend in the team, but it didn't prevent him from assuming that role as the team's leader and captin, both on and off the pitch.
That's the type of character Real Betis has been missing at the back. Marc Barta's frail and debilitated confidence has been a lingering concern for a few seasons and Vice-Captain Aïssa Mandi's departure to Villarreal left a gaping hole in the squad that until now, had yet to be filled.
The arrival of the Argentine will bring a much-needed boost to the squad as we head into the home-opener this evening and continue edging closer to the Europa League group draw.
